Former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov is hospitalized in critical condition and in artificial coma.
Karpov was found is serious condition near the state Duma, where he works as a member of the Russian Parliament. Initial reports suggested Karpov was a victim of an attack, citing head trauma and broken hip. Later, Albert Stepanyan said to TASS news agency that Karpov has not been a victim of attack. Stepanyan adds that Karpov now is in stable condition and suffered no injuries.
Update: FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich stated for Championat, “According to my information, Karpov’s condition is stable,” Championat adds that the initial reports from Russia are that doctors diagnosed the grandmaster with a closed craniocerebral injury and a fracture of the left femur, as well as severe alcohol intoxication.
