The 2022 Greek Chess Championships took place in Athens from 3-11 December. The Open event was played as a 10-player round-robin tournament and the Women’s event was an 11-player round-robin, with a time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1.
Georgios Mitsis convincingly won the 71st edition of the Gree Chess Championship scoring 7/9 points. He was a point and a half ahead of the runner-ups FM Nikolaos Koutlas and GM Spyridon Skembris. The 20-year-old won his maiden Greek Champion title with a round to spare.
WGM Marina Makropoulou won the Women’s event thanks to the first-round victory against Antonia Christodoulaki. The two players scored 7 points, each, to tie for the top. The first tie-break criteria was a direct encounter, and WGM Marina Makropoulou won the decisive game. Aged 62, Marina Makropoulou clinched her ninth national title in Greece and broke two records: the number of women’s champions titles and the oldest woman to win the national championship in Greece.
