Why was Hans Niemann invited to the Julius Baer Generation Cup?

Julius Baer Generation Cup gathers 16 world-class players spanning the age spectrum and set the chess world on fire as it featured the encounter between Hans Niemann and Magnus Carlsen. It was their first game to be played after the Sinquefield Cup 2022 when Carlsen withdrew from the event after losing to Niemann in the third round. Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social medias and Hikaru Nakamura claimed in his live stream that Niemann has done “unallowed things” during the online chess tournaments. Sinquefield Cup improved anti-cheating measures and Carlsen’s results got annulled. Niemann – Carlsen R6 game of Julius Baer Generation Cup started with all eyes on it, and finished after a couple of seconds as Carlsen decided to resign his game in the second move shocking the chess world. But why was Hans Niemann invited to the event organized by the Play Magnus group in the first place?

Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Director Arne Horvei explained that the answer is plain and easy, and it follows the Tour regulations: “Regulations says that if you are amongst the top eight players from the last tournament you are automatically qualified and invited to the next tournament. In Miami, we had eight players in our major and Hans Niemann participated there. So he was automatically then sent an invite to this event (Julius Baer Generation Cup). That invite was sent well before the tournament in Saint Louis started, so it means that we sent that invite to him (Niemann), and after the commotion in the chess world which of course, we have been following closely, we saw that there was no indication of Hans Niemann being involved in any sort of cheating in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. So there was no reason for us to revoke his invitation“. Horvei then described what the anti-cheating measures look like at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. See the complete interview below

Susan Polgar commented on Carlsen’s resignation saying it’s: “Definitely a protest move!“, while GM Jon Ludvig Hammer said Carlsen should be sanctioned during the live Norwegian TV program. Fair-Play specialist Kenneth Regan joined the live studio of the Julius Baer Generation Cup and spoke about Carlsen – Niemann’s game at the Sinquefield Cup 2022: Niemann played well, but not too well. Anish Giri dropped the bomb by saying, we know about online cheating by multiple other chess players, while Levon Aronian said that he believes Niemann hasn’t been the cleanest person when it comes to online chess. /// See more reactions here
