World School Chess Championships 2018

The World Schools Individual Championships 2018 will be held from 20th to 29th April 2018 in Durres, on the Adriatic coast of Albania, under the auspices of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and the Albanian Chess Federation.

All member national federations of FIDE and eligible players are invited to participate in the World School Chess Championships 2018 (categories for boys/open and girls under 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 years old).

The games will take place in the conference hall of the 4-star “FAFA Resort” Hotel in Durres, 40 km southwest of Tirana airport, an excellent resort on the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.

FIDE rated Swiss system will be used with 9 rounds played. The Championships shall be governed by the General Regulations for FIDE Competitions and these Rules. There shall be 6 categories: Under 07, Under 09, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 with separate events for Boys/Open and Girls (in total 12 championships).

Entitled to participate in each category are:
Under 07: Players born on or after 1 January 2011,
Under 09: Players born on or after 1 January 2009,
Under 11: Players born on or after 1 January 2007,
Under 13: Players born on or after 1 January 2005,
Under 15: Players born on or after 1 January 2003,
Under 17: Players born on or after 1 January 2001.

FIDE member federations & FIDE-endorsed Chess Academies shall have the right to send as many players as they wish, registered only through the National federation.

Players with personal rights of qualification, according to FIDE handbook D.04.08 article 4, are entitled to free board and lodging for 9 nights sharing a double room.

The Organizer shall award trophies to the players taking the first three places in each event. The Organizer shall also award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals to the players taking the first three places in each event. Trophies for 1st place and medals are awarded after applying tie-breaks.

For Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 categories, finishing first equal up to 3 players shall be awarded the FM/WFM title. The Silver & Bronze Medal winners shall be awarded the CM/WCM title.

For Under-07, Under-09 and Under-11 categories, finishing first equal up to 3 players or Silver & Bronze Medal winners shall be awarded the CM/WCM title.

As per FIDE regulations, all players and accompanying persons must be accredited and stay at the Official Hotel of the event. Bookings and accreditation are possible only through the tournament office.

School Chess Teachers, Arbiters and Trainers Seminars will be held from 27 to 29 April 2018.
