GM Bassem Amin and WGM Shahenda Wafa are African Chess Champions 2022

The African Individual Chess Championships 2022 concluded yesterday in Lagos, Nigeria. GM Amin Bassem and WGM Shahenda Wafa were crowned African Chess Champions for 2022 at the closing ceremony which took place by the end of the last round.

The Egyptian grandmaster Bassem Amin tied for the first place with his compatriot and African Chess Champion 2021 GM Ahmed Adly. Both players scored unbeaten 8/9 points, but tiebreak criteria favored Bassem who clinched his 6th African Champion title. Adly came second, while GM Abdelrahman Hesham won bronze with 7 points. The Egyptian women grandmaster Shahenda Wafa clinched the African Women’s Chess Championship 2022. She scored 7 points, being half a point ahead of WIM Charlize Van Zyl and Bridget Michael who tied for the second place with 6.5 points. Tiebreaks determined Charlize Van Zyl silver and Bridget Michael claimed bronze. Scroll down for final rankings
