One player tested positive on Covid19 at the FIDE World Cup 2021

When the round 2 of the FIDE World Cup 2021 started today, it looked like everything will go smoothly. At the start of the round, the reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen received the 2020 Fair Play Svetozar Gligoric award from the hands of FIDE Vice President Mahir Mammedov.

FIDE WORLD CUP 2021 – Top seeds join the fights

The FIDE World Cup 2021 kicked off in Sochi, Russia. The event takes place from 10 July – 8 August 2021 at the Galaxy Entertainment And Leisure Complex.

Of the 309 qualified players in the Open and Women’s groups, there were only 8 justified nonappearances, essentially due to travel-related problems. The event opened with an inaugural move made by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich in the game between GM Sanan Sjugirov and Elmer Prudente.

World No.5 Levon Aronian forfeited the first game of the FIDE World Cup. Aronian should have debuted in the 2021 FIDE World Cup, starting the competition from the round 2. However, it has been decided that Levon will not come to game 1 as he had symptoms of fever.

12-year-old Abhimanyu Mishra becomes the youngest GM in chess history

At just 12 years of age, Abhimanyu Mishra has become the youngest grandmaster in chess history. He broke the record of Sergey Karjakin who held the title of the youngest GM in the chess world.

Mishra’s quest for the youngest GM holder position had extra merit, having in mind the ongoing Covid19 pandemic and postponement of many over-the-board events. To break the record, 12 years old boy from New Jersey needed to take the last – final GM norm before 5th September, 2021.

Prague International Chess Festival 2021 took place from 14-20 June in Hotel Don Giovanni in Prague, Czech Republic.

Ekaterina Atalik wins Turkish Women’s Chess Championship 2021

The 2021 Arzum Turkish Women’s Championship took place from 13-19 June in Corum Turkey.

The event was played in 7 rounds, Swiss system, with participation of 32 players and time control of 90 minutes for the entire game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one.

European Women Chess Championship 2021

European Women Individual Chess Championship 2021 will take place from 8-21 August 2021, in Iasi, Romania,

The event will be played in 11 rounds, Swiss system, with time control 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from /move one.

The total prize fund of the event will be 60.000 Euros, with 10.000 Euros reserved for the Winner of the event.

FIDE World Chess Cup 2021 – Participants list

The FIDE World Chess Cup 2021 will take place in Sochi, starting July 10, 2021.

Out of 206 players taking part in FIDE World Cup 2021, a large portion earned their spots through Continental events, allowed to be organized in hybrid or online formats. This is the first time in the history of chess that the World Chess Championship cycle participants are decided in online events.

Grand Chess Tour Paris Rapid&Blitz 2021

Since 2016, the Paris Rapid and Blitz tournament has been a part of the Grand Chess Tour and this year is no exception. Through the support of Vivendi and Colliers International, Paris will host the second stop on the 2021 Grand Chess Tour and promises five days of excitement and fireworks.

Ten elite grandmasters will compete in 9 rounds of rapid chess and 18 rounds of blitz chess for a total prize fund of $150,000.
