Chess on Norwegian TV

Play Magnus Group has entered into an agreement with NRK and TV 2 for the Norwegian broadcasting rights for the new digital chess tour The Champions Chess Tour in 2021.

“Our vision is to develop chess into an international TV sport,” Arne Horvei, Tour Director in Play Magnus Group, said.

London Chess Classic also cancelled

“Due to the practical difficulties of organising an OTB London Chess Classic this December amid the Covid-19 crisis, we have taken the unavoidable decision to cancel this year’s event. However, we’re planning an outdoor London Chess Festival in Summer 2021!”

FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2020 postponed

FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2020 initially scheduled for the end of December 2020 are postponed to 2021.

Due to present circumstances and covid-19 pandemic situation, health and logistic challenges for organisation of such event couldn’t be resolved.

In view of the situation FIDE has decided to postpone the event aiming to organise it in spring 2021.

FIDE ECU Survey on Chess in Schools

Chess in Schools Programs are growing all over the Globe. ECU and FIDE have created a project which includes a survey, with aim to get an overview of statistics, methods and structure for Chess in Schools in different parts of the World.

The Survey can be completed through the Chess in Schools Survey Website by the persons involved in Chess in Schools programs in the federations affiliated to FIDE.

Altibox Norway Chess 2020 gathered six world top players: Reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, the 2019 World Chess Champion Challenger Caruana Fabiano, the leading Armenian chess player and world No. 9 Aronian Levon, Polish chess prodigy Jan Krzysztof Duda, the second youngest player ever to reach a rating of 2700 Alireza Firouzja and Norweigan Champion 2019 and Junior World Chess Champion 2017 Taryan Tari.

Susan Kantor Memorial

The Internet Chess Club (ICC) announces the 1st Annual Susan E. Kantor Memorial Online Chess Tournament to be held on Sunday, October 18, 2020. The event will be an online quick rated, seven-round event (full details at the end of the article) with all proceeds to benefit at-risk youth.

After Susan Kantor’s passing on August 5, ICC President Marty Grund reached out to Susan’s husband, Alan Kantor, to offer his condolences. Alan’s relationship with ICC goes back nearly 25 years—he was an ICC administrator, volunteer, helper, tournament director, and friend to everyone at ICC.

European Corporate Chess Championship 2020

European Corporate Chess Championship took place on 3rd and 4th October and was played through Tornelo Online Platform.

The concept was to have a GrandPrix event, with rapid tournament played in 8 rounds on 3rd October, and blitz event played in 9 rounds on 4th October.

Cumulative results of both days decided the Winner of the event – Sberbank Russia, who were convincing with taking both 1st places and crowned as the Winner of 1st European Online Corporate Chess Championship.

Gibraltar Chess Festival cancelled

With the greatest regret we hereby announce that the 19th edition of the Gibraltar International Chess Festival, which would normally have taken place in the second half of January, 2021, is officially cancelled.
