Carlsen and Abdusattorov lead Freestyle Chess Paris day 1

Day 1 of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 in Paris took place on April 7, 2025, marking the start of the second leg of this prestigious Chess960 (Freestyle Chess) tournament. The day featured the first half of the 11-round rapid round-robin phase with a time control of 10 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. Teodora Injac joins Anastasia Kirtadze in the lead in EWICC 2025

IM Teodora Injac (SRB, 2454) won her round 7 game to join WFM Anastasia Kirtadze on the top of the European Women Individual Chess Championship 2025. Fridrik Olafsson passes away at the age of 90

Sad news for the world of chess: Fridrik Olafsson passes away at the age of 90. Six times Icelandic champion, two times Nordic champion and FIDE from 1978 to 1982, Fridrik Olafsson resided in Reykjavik, where he recently celebrated his anniversary. This year’s edition of Reykjavik Open 2025 is dedicated to Grandmaster Fridrik Olafsson’s and his 90th birthday

Hans Niemann has withdrawn last minute from Paris Freestyle 2025. The news came right after the official technical meeting on April 5 at 19:00 CET. The organizers have cited “personal reasons”. There is no official statement from Hans Niemann’s camp as of today, April 6 21:30 CEST.

Anastasia Kirtadze is sole leader at European Women Individual Chess 2025

Anastasia Kirtadze is a talented chess player from Georgia, holding the title of Woman FIDE Master (WFM). Born in 2009, she has already made significant strides in the chess world at a young age. Among her achievements, Kirtadze won the FIDE World Under-14 Championship in rapid chess, held in Batumi, Georgia, and the Under-15 World School Chess Championship, marking her as the first Georgian to win a World Youth Championship title in over a decade.

Later the same afternoon Norwegian TV 2 announced that the main reason for Hans Niemann withdrawing from Paris Freestyle Chess 2025 is the implementation of new anti-cheating measures. The organizers have cited “personal reasons”. There is no official statement from Hans Niemann’s camp as of today, April 6 8:00 CEST.
