After Hans Niemann defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Carlsen decided to withdraw from the tournament, accusing Hans Niemann of cheating “more and more recently than he has publicly admitted”.<

Gukesh has caught up with Levon Aronian. After a Black win over Andrey Esipenko in the seventh round of the WR Chess Masters, the youngest competitor now shares the top spot with the oldest on 4.5 points. The two will meet in the ninth and final round, potentially a showdown for the tournament title.

Following the FIDE Council’s decision concerning the proposed transfer of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) to the Asian Chess Federation (ACF), the European Chess Union published the following statement:
 

The WR Chess Masters super-tournament will take place from 16-25 February in Dusseldorf, Germany. The event is played as a 10-player round-robin with Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anish Giri, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Gukesh D, Vincent Keymer, Praggnanandhaa and Andrey Esipenko in the field.

First against second: It could have been the game that makes the outcome of the tournament completely uncertain again. Wesley So, one point behind, had to do nothing more than defeat Levon Aronian with the white pieces. Then both would have been back on level ground and the field would have been close together. But the game ended in a draw – like the other four games of the sixth round, some of them after endgame battles lasting more than six hours. The standings are unchanged after this day of draws.

ECU Commission for Women’s Cess launched the initiative “European Women’s Chess Trophy” to reward women and girls for their results in chess.

“We inspire to support female chess players to actively take part in the solely women’s tournaments in Europe, especially in the closed (norm) ones and this way to support and promote tournaments’ organizers as well. We would like to do so by lunching “European Women’s Chess Trophy”, an initiative that will financially reward women and girls in the categories mentioned below”, writes the announcement.

A month after the European Chess Union published the official statement on the possible transfer of the Russian Chess Federation (CFR) to the Asian Chess Federation (ACF), FIDE published the resolution on the Russian Chess Federation joining ACF.

Levon Aronian’s fifth-round win doesn’t mean a preliminary decision in the WR Chess Masters, but the 40-year-old is now the clear favorite to win the tournament. After his full point against Anish Giri, Aronian leads the standings with four points from five games, one ahead of Wesley So and Gukesh with three each. With his third win in the tournament, Aronian is back in the world’s top 10 (live ranking).
