Russian Championship Superfinal in Kazan

Men’s and women’s Russian Championship Superfinal will this year be held in Kazan, the Russian Chess Federation CEO Mark Glukhovsky confirmed for R-Sport.

Kazan is a beautiful city with rich chess tradition, Glukhovsky noted. He added that only the chess school named after Rashid Nezhmetdinov has more than one thousand students.

GM Aleksa Strikovic claims VI International Chess Open Carlos I

The sixth edition of Abierto International Chess Tournament Carlos I took part from 21st to 29th June 2014 at Hotel Carlos I in Sanxenso, a municipality in Galicia, Spain.

The event was a 9 round Swiss with a time control 90′ + 30″.

Commonwealth Championship 2014 LIVE!

The 2014 Commonwealth Chess Championships are being held at Glasgow City College, in Glasgow, Scotland, from 30 June to 8 July 2014.

Last-year’s winner GM Abhijeet Gupta is top seeded.

Lev Polugaevsky Memorial 2014

The 4th Lev Polugaevsky Memorial is taking place on 2–10th July at the Polugaevsky Chess Club in Samara. The tournament is the 5th stage of this year’s Cup of Russia.

A big field of 139 participants testifies of the popularity of chess in this region. 17 Grandmasters and 12 International Masters honor the memory of the legendary Soviet player.

GM Isan Ortiz winner of DC International 2014

The 2nd D.C. International was held from June 26-30, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Arlington, Virginia.

The 9-round Swiss event with one Open section attracted 83 participants.

Hou Yifan wins Lopota FIDE Women’s Grand Prix with a round to spare

The 5th tournament of the FIDE Women’s Grand-Prix 2013-2014 is taking place from 18th June to 2nd July in Lopota, Georgia.

Twelve players compete in the round robin tournament. The event is organized by the Georgian Ministry of Sport and Youth, FIDE and Georgian Chess Federation, and sponsored by SOCAR.

SPICE Cup Open 2014

The 2014 SPICE Cup Open is scheduled to take place from 21st to 26th October at the Crowne Plaza Clayton Hotel in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA.

The 9-round Swiss open is sponsored by Webster University and the Susan Polgar Foundation.

The event offers the prize fund of $13,000 guaranteed (up from $11,000 last year) and the possibility to earn FIDE title norms.

Late Surge Earns Troff Junior Closed Championship

GM Kayden Troff, the 16-year-old phenom out of Utah, has won the 2014 U.S. Junior Closed Championship in clear first with an impressive 7/9 score, grabbing the national championship for players under 21 by finishing 1.5 points ahead of the field.

For his efforts, Troff has won the top prize of $3,000, as well as an invitation to the 2015 U.S. Championship.
