Anish Giri has qualified for the Candidates Chess 2026. The renowned Dutch Grandmaster is now one of the eight players that will have a shot at challenging the World Champion Gukesh.

Matthias Bluebaum qualifies for the Candidates

German Grandmaster Matthias Bluebaum has made history by qualifying for the Candidates Chess 2026 after finishing second at the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss with 7.5/11 points. His strong performance not only secured him a coveted Candidates spot but also marked a milestone for German chess, as he becomes the first player from the country to reach this stage since Robert Hübner in 1991.

Vaishali wins the Grand Swiss, qualifies for Women Candidates 2026

Vaishali Rameshbabu has clinched a historic victory at the FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss 2025, securing her qualification for the Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026.

This is a second consecutive title for Vaishali and she will be one of the eight contenders to have a shot at a World Championship match.

Kateryna Lagno qualifies for Women Candidates 2026

Kateryna Lagno has secured her spot in the 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament by drawing her final-round game against Ulviyya Fataliyeva in the Women’s Grand Swiss tournament on September 15, 2025. This result ensures her qualification alongside already confirmed participants Zhu Jiner, Aleksandra Goryachkina, Divya Deshmukh, Koneru Humpy, and Zhongyi Tan.

Women Candidates 2026

The Women’s World Chess Championship 2026 is set to be one of the most anticipated events in the chess calendar. The match will determine the next Women’s World Chess Champion and will feature defending champion Ju Wenjun, who secured her title in the Women’s World Chess Championship 2025, against a challenger yet to be determined. The dates and host city for the event are still to be announced.

Candidates Chess 2026

The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 is an eight-player double round-robin chess tournament scheduled to take place between March 25 and May 1, 2026, to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship 2026 against reigning champion D. Gukesh. Organized by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), the tournament follows a revamped qualification system introduced in 2024, that follows a merit-based qualification pathways through major events, ratings, and the FIDE Circuit.

Today is the final round of the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025, one of the most important competitions of the year, giving two qualification spots for the FIDE Candidates 2026. Five share the lead before the final round, with Matthias Bluebaum, Alireza Firouzja, Anish Giri, Hans Moke Niemann, Vincent Keymer all at 7,0/9. Nine more players are half a point behind – Abhimanyu Mishra, Andy Woodward, Arjun Erigaisi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Sarin Nihal, Awonder Liang, Santosh Gujrathi Vidit, Yangyi Yu, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

The Japan Open 2025 will take place from September 19 to September 23 in Tokyo, Japan. This tournament is separated into 2 categories – Masters and Challengers. The Challengers section is a 9-round Swiss system tournament with time control of 90 min + 30 sec/move.
