Chess Olympiad 2014 – Opening Ceremony Video

The organizing committee of the 2014 Chess Olympiad has released a video that will be featured at the opening ceremony:

“This video gives a good idea of what we want the 2014 Chess Olympiad to be all about – celebrating the game of chess, the players from 180 participating nations and what Tromsø 2014 stands for. It will be shown at the beginning of the opening ceremony. The music is by “Violet Road” – a popular local band.”

13th Charleroi Open LIVE!

The 13th edition of Charleroi Open is taking place from 27th July to 2nd August 2014 in Charleroi, Belgium.

The event is a 9-round Swiss Tournament with prize fund in the amount of 6.000 €.

227 players take part in the tournament, first seed is GM Evgeny Gleizerov from Russia.

GM Julio Granda Zuniga claims Andorra Open 2014

Peruvian Grandmaster Julio Granda Zuniga took a clear first place in the 32nd Andorra International Chess Open that was held on 19-27th July at the Sant Gothard Hotel in Erts (La Massana).

The 9-round Swiss event was organized by the Federació d’Escacs Valls d’Andorra.

The 47th Biel Chess Festival 2014 included a 11-round Swiss Master Tournament that was taking part on 14-25th July 2014.

16th Lake Sevan Chess Tournament 2014 LIVE!

The 16th Lake Sevan International Chess Tournament is taking place from 26th July to 4th August 2014 in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

The event is organized by the Armenian Chess Academy in conjunction with the Armenian Chess Federation in a 10 player round-robin format.

10 Grandmasters from Armenia and abroad will take part in the tournament. First seed is Alexander Areshchenko from Ukraine.

2nd Gideon Japhet Memorial 2014 – final VIDEO, PHOTOS

The 2nd Gideon Japhet Memorial Open Chess Tournament 2014 took place on 16-24th July 2014 in Jerusalem, Israel, incorporating professional and amateur chess.

The fascinating Rapid Chess duel between top grandmasters Boris Gelfand and Peter Svidler was the most widely recognized part of the event. The final result of the duel is 5: 3 in favor of Peter Svidler.

40th International Chess Open Vila de Sitges

The 40th International Chess Open Vila de Sitges is being held from 22nd to 31st July at the Casino Prado Theatre Hall in Sitges, Spain.

The organizers are Penya d’Escacs Casino Prado Suburense and Hotel & Apartaments Sunway Playa Golf.

The event consists of two sections – Group A (for players rated over 2000) and Group B (U2100), both to be played over nine rounds of Swiss system.

44th Continental Chess Open in Sturbridge, Massachusetts

The 44th Annual Continental Open will be held from August 7-10, 2014, at the Host Hotel at Cedar Lake, 366 Main St (Rt 20 West), Sturbridge, Massachusetts (I-84 Exit 3, near I-90).

The event has 7 sections: Open, Under 2100, Under 1900, Under 1700, Under 1500, Under 1300 and Under 1000. All sections have either 4-day (August 7-10), 3-day (August 8-10) or 2-day (August 9-10) schedules to play in.

13th Manhattan Open

The 13th Annual Manhattan Open is taking place from July 25-27, 2014, at the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel, 481 Eighth Ave at 34th St. across from Penn Station, New York, NY.

The event has 5 sections: Open, Under 2300, Under 2000, Under 1700 and Under 1400. All sections have either 3-day (July 25-27) or 2-day (July 26-27) schedules to play in.

Karen Grigoryan sole winner in Sant Martí Open

The 16th Obert Internacional Sant Martí took place from 13th to 21st July at the Centre Civic Sant Marti: c/ Selva de Mar, Barcelona, Spain.

The tournament format was 9-round Swiss with the prize fund of 7000 EUR.

There were two competitions: Group A, for players with FCE, FEDA, FIDE elo bigger than 2000 and Group B for players with FCE, FEDA and FIDE elo lower than 1999.
