The German Masters Women Individual Chess Tournament 2014 is organized by the German Chess Federation in collaboration with the Dresden Chess Festival and Meissen UKA on 16-24th November 2014.

The event is taking place at Wyndham Garden Hotel in Dresden, the capital city of the Free State of Saxony in Germany.

European Chess Union is creating the new official website, which is currently in a test version.

The site will operate under the historic ECU domain name www.europechess.org which is in the availability of the ECU administration.

Also in the final round of a Remco Heite Chess Tournament, anything can happen. And that’s what happened. Whereas everyone thought Daniel Fridman had the best chances, as he had White against the tormented Gawain Jones, there wasn’t even a playoff in it for the Latvian this time. Sipke Ernst, the lowest-rated player, ran off with first prize after driving Loek van Wely bonkers from a bad position.

Three draws in the penultimate round. Two endgames, where one defender smoothly cruised to the draw and the other had to withdraw further and further, but in the end escaped by the skin of his teeth. And on the other end, an epic fight between who else but Gawain Jones and Loek van Wely.

The Individual Portuguese Rapid Chess Championship took place on 15th November 2014 in Leiria, a city in the Centro Region of Portugal.

The event was organized by one of the latest and most dynamic clubs, Corvos dos Lis, in collaboration with the Leiria Municipality.

119 players, including 17 with international titles took part in the tournament surpassing the number of 92 participants in the last season in Carregosa. 27 different clubs were represented in the tournament.

The UAE Chess Federation & Sharjah Chess and Cultural Club, on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and FIDE organize the 2014 Sharjah – Capital of Islamic Culture Individual Chess Tournament on 14-24th November 2014 in Sharjah, UAE.

The event is a 9-round Swiss tournament with 4.000 $.

Top seed is Azerbaijani GM Eltaj Safarli (2628).

At the meeting on 24th October in Batumi/Georgia, the ECU Board appointed the new ECU Commissions: Educational Commission, Events Commission, Arbiters Council and Women’s Commission.

We will talk more about the tournament leaders tomorrow, I promise. There are three of them: Daniel Fridman, Dimitri Reinderman and Sipke Ernst. First we have to speak one more time about Gawain Jones, whose case is starting to become harrowing. Against Sipke Ernst he was seeking an adventure once again, and for a long time it looked as if he was cruising towards his first full point. But alas, once more it was not to be. We will save that best bit for last.
