Sam Shankland’s last game of the 2022 US Chess Championship ended in a draw after only 8 minutes of play as his opponent Leinier Dominguez decided to go for an early threefold repetition in Najdorf. Shankland was disappointed with the repetition of the moves and requested to join the event’s live studio to apologize for a quick draw.

19-year-old Hans Niemann defeated Samuel Sevian in yesterday’s 12th round of the US Chess Championship (Replay the game here). Niemann managed to score in a thrilling endgame as Sevian missed his chances to hold a draw. An interesting and unusual situation was spotted on the venue’s camera which showed the players communicating during the game.

Samuel Sevian accidentally decapitated Niemann’s king, picked it up from the board in the middle of the game, and tried to fix it. The 19-year-old protested and asked for his King back.
