Awonder Liang switches from Classical to Freestyle, to face Carlsen in R6

The rules of Grenke Chess 2025 allow players to switch from Classical to Freestyle after round 4. By switching, the players keep the points and new pairings are constructed. Awonder Liang, one of the leaders in the open section, has decided to make that switch and will be paired against Magnus Carlsen in round 6. Rasmus Svane about the secret to finding the best first move in Freestyle chess

Rasmus Svane is a Danish-German chess grandmaster, born on May 21, 1997, in Allerød, Denmark, and currently living in Lübeck, Germany. He represents Germany in international competitions, including the European Team Chess Championship and the Chess Olympiad. As of September 2023, he is the No. 5 ranked German player with a FIDE rating of 2621, peaking at 2651 in May 2022. Svane learned chess at age 4 and achieved notable early success, winning the German U14 Chess Championship in 2010. He earned the International Master title in 2013 and the Grandmaster title in 2016 at age 19.

European Universities Chess Championship 2025

European Universities Chess Championship 2025, part of the European Universities Games, will take place from 16-20 September in Yerevan, Armenia. The event is organized by Armenian State University of Economics, Armenian Student Sports Federation and Chess Academy of Armenia, governed by the European University Sports Association (EUSA).

North American Youth Championship 2025

North American Youth Chess Championship 2025 will be held August 17-23, 2025 at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario (Canada).

The age categories for the 2025 North American Youth are Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18. Each category has an Open and Girls section. For this tournament, a player’s age is his or her age as of Jan. 1, 2025. This event is open to players from Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Pan-American Youth Chess Festival 2025

The Confederation of Chess for Americas (CCA) and the Peruvian Sports Chess Federation have announced the XXXV Pan-American Youth Chess Festival will be held from July 27 to August 3, at the Callao Regional Sports Village in Lima, Peru.

There will be 12 sections in the tournament, Open and Girls for each age category: Under 18, Under 16, Under 14, Under 12, Under 10 and Under 8. A player’s age as of January 1, 2025 determines their age eligibility for a section.
