A tournament called Battle of Champions 2025 will be held, jointly organized by the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the National Carpet Museum. Battle of Champions 2025 is a match between a top chess player of Azerbaijan vs a world renowned player. The match is parallel to Baku Open 2025.

Guha Mitrabha wins Sydney Open 2025

The Indian chess Grandmaster Guha Mitrabha is the new chess king of Australia. After winning the O2C Doeberl Chess 2025, now Guha Mitrabha conquered Sydney Open in the same month of April. GM Mitrabha finished with 7,5/9 at sole first, half a point ahead of silver medalist IM Ronald Dableo (Philippines). The bronze medal is for Sayantan Das (India). Top woman of the event is Anna-Maja Kazarian (Netherlands) with 5,0/9.

Sardinia World Chess Festival 2025 LIVE

Sardinia World Chess Festival 2025 is taking place April 27 – May 3 in Italy. It is a 9 round FIDE rated Swiss Open. In total there are 59 titled players, including Grandmasters Daniel Dardha, Leon Luke Mendoca, S L Narayanan, Christopher Woojin Yoo, Francesco Sonis, Ihor Samunenkov, Lorenzo Ludici, Elham Amar, etc.

Five-Time World Champion Ju Wenjun visits Hong Kong

Five-time Women’s World Chess Champion Grandmaster Ju Wenjun, who successfully defended her title just last week, does what a world champion should do – spreads the joy of chess through the world. Ju Wenjun made a visit to Hong Kong, an appearance coincided with a welcome event and exhibition match organized by the Hong Kong China Chess Federation in collaboration with Lingnan University. Accompanying her was her coach, Grandmaster Ni Hua.

Chinese Team Chess Championship 2025

The Chinese Team Chess Championship 2025 is taking place 25 April – May 3 in Zhang Jiakou, Hebei, China. 18 teams participate in the open section (see the women section here). Top seeded is the team of Shandong (rating average 2523) with GM Yang Wen on board 1. The highest rated players in the competition are GMs Wang Yue, Li Chao B, Xiangyu Xu, Shanglei Lu, Wen Yang, etc. Scroll down for the full team composition.

Chinese Women Team Chess Championship 2025

The Chinese Team Chess Championship 2025 is taking place 25 April – May 3 in Zhang Jiakou, Hebei, China. The women section of the competition features many local top players as IM Yang Shen, WGM Yixin Ding, IM Qi Guo, WGM Qian Huang, WGM Mo Zhai, WGM Xiaowen Zhang, etc. (see the open section here) Scroll down for the full team composition.

The 2025 Kenya National Schools Chess Championship happened 4-8 April 2025 at the Mangu High School. A record total of 7,242 players from 880 schools took part in the event, making it the biggest chess tournament in Africa! With that mark Kenya surpasses the expected 6000 players at the Supernationals
