23rd Fajr International Open Chess Tournament

Chess Association of West Azerbaijan province on behalf of I.R. Iran Chess Federation has the honor to invite all players from national federations to participate in the 23rd Fajr International Open Chess Tournaments from 18-23 February 2015 in Urmia, Iran.

The 9-round Swiss open tournament will take place at Alghadir Sport Complex located in Varzesh St., Urmia.

The time control will be 90 minutes for the entire game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from the first move.

The top prizes are EUR 2000 / 1500 / 1150 / 800 / 500 etc

SPICE set to move to new building at Luhr Library

Webster University purchased Luhr Library from Eden Theological Seminary over four years ago, but it wasn’t used until January 15 during the 2015 spring convocation.

“We hoped and expected to use this building much sooner than today,” Provost Julian Schuster said during the convocation.

Webster University’s Director of Public Relations Patrick Giblin said Luhr Library remained unoccupied since Webster purchased it in 2010, due to the university going through the city’s approval process.

GM Kiril Georgiev collects another trophy in Skopje

Bulgarian champion GM Kiril Georgiev won the Karposh Rapid Tournament that was held on 24th January at restaurant “Granit” in Skopje, FYROM.

The 9-round Swiss tournament with the time control 15′+5” gathered 107 players. The event was organized by the Municipality Karpos and Chess Club Gambit Aseko-SEE. The total prize fund was 1250 EUR.

Sevilla Open 2015

The 40th International Open Ciudad de Sevilla is set to take place from 25th January to 1st February at the Hotel Al-Andalus Palace in Seville, Spain.

The tournament is organized by the Federacion Sevillana de Ajedrez with support from Diputación de Sevilla, Turismo y Comercio Junta de Andalucía and Educación Cultura y Deporte Junta de Andalucía.

The playing format is 9-round Swiss. 217 participants from 17 countries are registered, including 8 Grandmasters and 7 International Masters.

Salome Melia and Jovanka Houska to give opening simuls in Gibraltar

The 2015 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival starts its annual adventure when two of participants, International Masters Salome Melia and Jovanka Houska, offer two simultaneous displays for early arrivals.

The simuls will begin around 8pm on Sunday in the main restaurant. The games will provide an ideal warm-up for Amateur and Challenger participants, whose events begin the following morning.

9th Tashkent Open – Memorial of Georgy Agzamov

The Uzbekistan Chess Federation is announcing the international chess tournament 9th Tashkent Open – Memorial of Georgy Agzamov, the first grandmaster of Uzbekistan, which will be held on 10-20th May, 2015, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The official venue of the tournament is hotel “Shodlik Palace”.

The tournament is a 9-round Swiss with the time control 90 min + 30 sec increment from move one. The total prize fund is 20,000 US dollars.

38th Cardinal Open in Columbus

The 38th Cardinal Open Chess Tournament takes place 23-25th January, 2015, at the Embassy Suites Airport Hotel in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

The event has five sections: Open (FIDE rated, FIDE rules), U2100, U1800, U1500 and U1200. The playing format is 5-round Swiss with time control 40/120, SD/60 d5.

The projected prize fund is $10,000.

GM Krishnan Sasikiran to receive prestigious Padma Shri Award

Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran of Chennai will become the fifth Indian chess player to receive the prestigious Padma Shri Award on January 26, 2015, at Delhi during the Republic Day celebrations.
