In Memoriam: GM Alexander Lastin

Russian Grandmaster Alexander Lastin passed away on Friday at the age of 38. The funeral will take place 25th January in Zheleznovodsk.

Lastin was one of the leading chess players in Stavropol Krai, Russian Champion in 2002 and winner of the Moscow Open in 2006.

In 2014 he was active in rapid events in North Caucasian Federal District. His last tournament was in November in Grozny where he convincingly won the Cup Final 2014 SKFO.

Schools Chess Championship in Durres, Albania

During the recent years, after the agreement with FIDE, the Albanian Chess Federation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports has given the top priority to the ‘Chess in Schools’ project, by introducing the chess activities to all schools in the country.

Women’s World Chess Championship 2015

The FIDE Women’s World Chess Championship will be held from March 16th to April 7th in Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi, Russia. The organization of the Championship was agreed during the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

39th Internet Based FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar

Official FIDE logoFIDE and the FIDE Arbiters’ Commission are going to organize an Internet Based FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar, from 9 to 14 March 2015, under the auspices of FIDE.

The participation is free for all Arbiters.

Dreaming King Open in San Diego

The Dreaming King Open was held from 17-19th January, 2015, at the Marriott San Diego Airport/Liberty Station in San Diego, California, USA.

The 6-round Swiss event consisted of seven sections with a total of 155 participants. The guaranteed prize fund was 17,000 USD.

8th Karen Asrian Memorial Chess Tournament

The Armenian Chess Federation is organizing an international open chess tournament, dedicated to the memory of GM Karen Asrian, which will take place on June 15-25, 2015, in the prominent resort town of Jermuk.

All interested chess players can participate in the 9-round Swiss tournament. GM Karen Grigoryan was the winner of the 7th Asrian Memorial.

IM Nino Batsiashvili is 2015 Georgian champion for women

Georgia FlagThe Georgian Chess Federation organized the 2015 edition of the 72nd Georgian Individual Chess Championship for women from 10th to 19th January, 2015, in Tbilisi, the capital and largest city of Georgia.

Karen Grigoryan and Susanna Gaboyan are new Armenian Champions

The 75th Armenian Men’s Championship and 70th Armenian Women’s Championship were held from 12-21st January at the Central Chess Club “Tigran Petrosian” in Yerevan.

Both events were 10-player round robins.
