FIDE General Assembly in Tromso (Updated)

The FIDE General Assembly started on 11th August at 9am at the Tromso University.

The Assembly started with obituaries and a minute of silence in the memory of departed Grandmasters, organizers and arbiters.

Anthems of Norway and FIDE were played and then followed the report of Ms Margaret Murphy, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

Baku Open 2014 – Participants

The International Chess Festival Baku Open 2014, dedicated to the Independence Day of Republic of Azerbaijan, will take place from 21st September to 1st October at the AF Hotel near Caspian Sea.

The Festival is organized by the Azerbaijan Youth & Sport Ministry and Azerbaijan Chess Federation. The total prize fund is 50,000 USD and the first place is 10,000 USD worth.

The event is a 9-round Swiss Open with a time control 90′ + 30″ consisting of 139 players from 15 different countries, including 5 GMs, 6 IMs and 1 WIM.

Top seed is Ukrainian GM Andrey Sumets (2622).

European Chess Club Cup presented at Chess Olympiad

404 international players from 60 clubs and 31 European federations have registered to compete at the European Chess Club Cup, which will take place in Bilbao from 14 to 20 September 2014.

FIDE Elections Tomorrow: Open Letters

sahThe FIDE General Assembly will start on Monday 11th August at 9am. Already in the first session FIDE elections will take place, as a culmination of the campaign that started in Tallinn last year.

In the last day before the elections, both campaigns have issued open letters that address the election procedures.

FIDE World Senior Chess Championships 2014

The 24th FIDE World Senior Chess Championships are scheduled to take place from 23rd October to 5th November at the conference center of the 5-star hotel “Mediterranean Village” in Katerini, Greece.

The World Senior Chess Championships are open to all players, regardless of rating and title, who have reached the age of 50 and represent National Chess Federations which are members of FIDE. There is no limit in the number of participants per federation.

Pavlidis and Sumets share first place in Kavala
