Canada broke ranks with its traditional Western allies in this FIDE election and supported the incumbent administration for the first time in 28 years.

The 13th World University Chess Championship is set to take place from 17th to 24th August at the Park Hotel Diament in Katowice, Poland.

The Championship is organized by the Polish Chess Federation and FISU, and will be held in two sections – Men and Women.

Each national federation is entitled to register up to 8 players in total. Both sections will be played over nine rounds of Swiss system.

Tromso, Norway – The President of the Russian Chess Federation, Andrey Filatov, and his counterpart from the Moldovan Chess Federation, Igor Dodon, signed an agreement today on cooperation in promoting chess in schools.

The FIDE General Assembly started on 11th August at 9am at the Tromso University.

The Assembly started with obituaries and a minute of silence in the memory of departed Grandmasters, organizers and arbiters.

Anthems of Norway and FIDE were played and then followed the report of Ms Margaret Murphy, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

The International Chess Festival Baku Open 2014, dedicated to the Independence Day of Republic of Azerbaijan, will take place from 21st September to 1st October at the AF Hotel near Caspian Sea.

The Festival is organized by the Azerbaijan Youth & Sport Ministry and Azerbaijan Chess Federation. The total prize fund is 50,000 USD and the first place is 10,000 USD worth.
