International Chess Festival Iasi Open

The 1st International Chess Festival Iasi Open is set to take place on 10-18th May at the Palas Mall in Iasi, Romania.

The Festival is organized by the AJ Sah Iasi and consists of Open A (9 round Swiss), Open B (U12 juniors, 9 round Swiss) and Open C (blitz).

The total prize fund is 25,000 EUR with 21,000 EUR allocated for Open A. The top prize is 5000 EUR.

5th International Villach Open

The 5th International Villach Open will take place on 8-15th February, 2014, at the Volkshaus Völkendorf, Neubaugasse 9, A-9500 Villach, Austria.

The event is organized by the ESV ASKÖ Admira Villach Sektion Schach and is valid as the 32nd open championship of the city of Villach.

The tournament format is 9-round Swiss and the top prize is 1000 EUR.

Kashlinskaya and Charochkina with perfect score in Moscow Open 2014

Moscow chess players Alina Kashlinskaya and Daria Charochkina have maintained perfect scores after winning their games in round 5 of the the Moscow Open 2014 Russian Women’s Premier Cup.

Gary Kasparov seeks Croatian citizenship

Former world chess champion Gary Kasparov has placed a request to get Croatian citizenship.

The Russian chess Grandmaster now expects a reply from Croatian authorities, daily newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija reveals.

Gary Kasparov is often spending his holidays in sea resort Makarska, where he owns a house and where he had training session with Magnus Carlsen.

Master Class with GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave

Last night saw the fourth and final Master Class of the Tradewise Chess Festival.

It was a presentation by former World Junior Champion, GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FIDE 2745). He showed a remarkable game he played versus Chinese Grand Master Ding Liren last year.

Tradewise Chess Festival: Amateurs B and Challengers B

Another tough week of competition has been successfully completed. The second 2014 Tradewise Chess Festival prizegiving took place yesterday afternoon ahead of round 9 in the Gibraltar Masters.

Once again Festival Organiser Brian Callaghan, OBE presented the prizes.

Well done to the winners and thank you to all the competitors for making the tournaments so enjoyable.

Carlsen wins Zurich Chess Challenge, Caruana best in Rapid

World Champion Magnus Carlsen emerged winner of the Zurich Chess Challenge 2014 in combined standings after classical and rapid games.

The Zurich Chess Challenge 2014, the strongest tournament in history with average elo 2801, started with a blitz event on Wednesday 29th January at Hotel Savoy in Zurich, Switzerland.

Blitz Pairs – Three Teams Share First Place

The traditional Blitz Pairs event at the 2014 Tradewise Chess Festival took place at the Caleta Hotel on Sunday night.

Once again this very popular six round contest drew in the players. There were 38 teams competing of two players each. This included five Grand Masters and eight International masters and other titled players.

12th Khazar International Open

The 12th Khazar International Open Chess Tournament is set to take place on 11-18th February at the Yadegar Imam Sport Complex in Rasht, Iran.

The tournament will be played in four sections:
- Open A for players rated above 2100
- Open B for players rated under 2100
- Open C for women
- Open D for youth under 14

Top prize in Open A is around 1200 USD.
