Chinese prodigies Hou and Yi will play in León

Nearly all top chess stars over the past 27 years have played the Magistral Ciudad de Leon. And that collection will be enriched in 2014 (5-9 June) with two of the biggest all times prodigies.

Both are Chinese: Yifan Hou, current Women’s World Champion, and Yi Wei (14 years old), who’s future looks very bright.

In Memoriam: GM Gyula Sax

The Hungarian Chess Federation informed that Grandmaster Gyula Sax passed away on 25th January after a heart attack.

Gyula Sax (born 1951) was one of the world’s leading players in late 70′s and early 80′s. He won the Hungarian Championship twice and qualified for Candidate Matches from Subotica Interzonal in 1987.

Sax participated in ten Chess Olympiads, winning one gold and two silver medals with the team and one individual bronze medal.

Festa da Uva 2014

On Tuesday Chessdom relayed information that World Champion Magnus Carlsen will visit Caxias do Sul in Brazil to participate in a number of events.

After the blind simul with visually impaired players, lecture, 4-player knockout tournament, press conference and a regular simul, Carlsen will play in the open rapid tournament Festa da Uva 2014.

International Chess Open Tarvisio 2014

The 1st International Open Tarvisio 2014 is set to take place on 17-21st April at the Palasport in Tarvisio, Italy.

The tournament is organized by the Comune di Tarvisio, Provincia di Udine and Accademia Internazionale di Scacchi.

The event will be held over 7 rounds of Swiss system with the time control 90 min + 30 sec per move. The total prize fund is 4500 EUR.

Moscow Open 2014 – Record Number of Participants

The Moscow Open 2014, International RSSU Cup will be held from Jan 30th to Feb 9th in auditoriums on the Russian State Social University campus.

It is expected that event marking its 10-year anniversary will again break the record for the number of participants – with players wishing to enter now passing the 1700 mark. This is the world’s largest unofficial chess tournament.

Zurich Blitz live!

Zurich Chess Challenge is set to take place from 29th January to 4th February, 2014, in the largest city in Switzerland. The tournament will start with a blitz with all six players.
