International Grandmaster Open in Chennai – Three players share lead

Grandmaster M R Lalith Babu of India defeated GM Ter-Sahakyan Samvel of Armenia and moved into shared lead with 4.5 points, after the fifth round of the Chennai Grandmaster International Open Chess tournament held in celebration of the FIDE World Championship Match 2013 at Nehru Stadium, Chennai here today.

Karpov Rapid Tournament in Chelyabinsk

The Chelyabinsk State University hosted a rapid chess tournament in honour of the 12th World Champion Anatoly Karpov on 16-17th November.

88 players from 16 Russian cities, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Slovakia and Latvia took part in the competition. Among them were 12 Grandmasters.

After 11 rounds of play, Grandmaster Ivan Bukavshin (2612) took a clear first place with 9,0 points.

Grandmasters Igor Lysyj (2640) and Petr Kostenko (2451) and FM Artiom Frolov (2388) shared the second place with 8,5 points each.

Zurab Azmaiparashvili runs for the post of ECU President

Zurab Azmaiparashvili, Grandmaster and 1st Deputy Minister for Sports in Georgia, announced at gala dinner in Warsaw his candidacy for the President of ECU in 2014.

Chennai based Grandmaster R R Laxman stunned the top seed GM Ivan Popov of Russia in the second round of the Chennai Grand Master International Open Chess tournament held in celebration of the FIDE World Championship Match 2013 at Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, here today.

Magnus Carlsen extends lead in game 6 of FIDE World Championship

Magnus Carlsen scored a second consecutive victory in the FIDE World Championship in Chennai to increase the lead to 4-2 after six games of play.

Sunday is the rest day, the second half of the match continues on Monday with Anand playing white pieces.

The defending champion Viswanathan Anand opened with 1.e4 and the challenger responded with the Berlin Ruy Lopez, which almost brought him success in the 4th game of the match.

Magnus Carlsen of Norway is the World Chess Champion!

Magnus Carlsen of Norway became the new World Chess Champion after defeating the previous champion Viswanathan Anand of India by 6,5-3,5 in the match that was held from 7th November in Chennai, India.

The last 10th game (out of 12 possible) finished in a draw after 65 moves of play and Carlsen accumulated the necessary 6,5 points to claim the title.

The ninth game of the FIDE World Championship Match, sponsored by Tamil Nadu state and currently ongoing in Chennai, finished in Magnus Carlsen’s favour after 28 moves of play.

The defending champion Viswanathan Anand made the first move 1.d4, which was greeted with enthusiastic applause in the playing hall. The challenger and world’s top rated player responded with his trusted Nimzo-Indian defence.
