Interview with Garry Kasparov: “Chess is back to where it belongs” (VIDEO)

The 13th World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov gave an exclusive interview during the second round of Grand Chess Tour Romania 2022.

Kasparov shared his impressions about the first 2022 Grand Chess Tour event and the opening ceremony which took place in the Romanian Parliament: “It was spectacular! Chess now is back to where it belongs… It’s the level of respect and admiration that the game has been lacking for a long time.”.

FIDE dismissed Karjakin’s appeal on the 6 months ban

Today, May 6th 2022, the Appeal Chamber of the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) formed by its Chairperson Mr. Francois Strydom, and members Mr. Khaled Arfa and Mr. David Hater, announced its decision to dismiss the appeal presented by Grandmaster Sergey Karjakin. 

The 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 Postponed

Following detailed discussions with all parties concerned regarding the new wave of Covid19 appearing in China, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Executive Board decided to postpone the 19th Asian Games, which were scheduled to be held in Hangzhou from 10 to 25 September 2022.

Sharjah Chess Masters 2022

The 5th edition of the Sharjah Chess Masters international tournament will be held from 20th-30th May in Sharjah Cultural & Chess Club.

The event will be held as an Invitational Tournament, with (maximum) 80 players of FIDE standard rating of 2300 and above, as of May 2022 FIDE rating list.  Out of these 80 players, the 60 were selected by the middle of April 2022 and the rest 20 were given Wild Card participation permission.

2022 Open and Women’s Championships of North Macedonia concluded in Skopje

The 2022 Open and Women’s Chess Championships of North Macedonia concluded yesterday in Skopje. The events simultaneously took place in Hotel Continental, being played from April 29 – May 5.

59 players competed in the 9 round swiss system Open tournament, while 12 women played the 7 rounds swiss system Women’s Championship.

Ilmars Starostits and Laura Rogule are Latvian Chess Champions

The Latvian Chess Championship 2022 and Latvian Women’s Chess Championship 2022 took place from April 27 – May 4 in Riga.

GM Ilmars Starostits convincingly won the men’s championship scoring 8/9 points. Starostits became the Latvian Champion for the second time in his career, 20 years after his first National triumph in 2002.
