Women Rule in Battle of Sexes

Saturday night will undoubtedly become one of the most memorable social events of the 10 day Tradewise International Chess Festival when the men and the women of this tournament played a friendly, yet fearsome Battle of the Sexes – a rapid match with a time limit of 10 minutes for all the moves plus an increment of 5 seconds a move.

The Women ruled the night and won by 2-0, with a third game (played at 10+0) played and won by the Men.

Chinese players on Gibraltar beach

It was down on the beach for the team from China today competing in the Gibraltar Masters of the 2014 Tradewise Chess Festival.

The crisp air and the warm radiant sunshine made it a near-perfect day in Gibraltar today. The team and their coach took some time out on Catalan Bay (the beach below the Caleta Hotel) to enjoy the sunshine just like everyone else participating in the tournament.

All said they were enjoying their time on the Rock both in and out of competition.

Amateurs and Challengers continue to embrace the Tradewise Chess Festival

Over the 12 years of the Gibraltar chess festival the Gibraltar Masters has run alongside the Amateurs and the Challengers tournaments. These are played from early in the day throughout the 10 day Tradewise Chess Festival and the numbers keep increasing year on year.

This year we have a record number of players in both these tournaments from all over the world who have embraced the festival.

David Bronstein Memorial in Minsk

The Belarus Chess Federation is holding an International Open Tournament from 11th to 19th February to mark the 90th anniversary of David Bronstein’s birth.

The former World Championship challenger, who nearly dethroned Mikhail Botvinnik in 1951, was born in 1924 in Ukraine and passed away in 2006 in Minsk.

The Open A will be open for the players rated above 2100 FIDE, while the Open B will accept lower rated participants.

Vassily Ivanchuk gives a lively Masterclass in Gibraltar

This was the second Masterclass of the tournament and it proved quite lively as elite – GM Vassily Ivanchuk gave an inspiring display of games and analysis.

Vassily showed five games he played in a match in Riga, 1991, versus Leonid Yudasin, and then took questions from the audience.

8th Tashkent Open – Memorial of Georgy Agzamov

The Uzbekistan Chess Federation has the honor to invite all chess players to take part in the international chess tournament 8th Tashkent Open – Memorial of Georgy Agzamov, the first grandmaster of Uzbekistan, which will be held on 14-24th May in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The tournament is a 9-round Swiss with the time control 90 min + 30 sec increment from move one. The total prize fund is 20 000 US dollars.
