Asian Nations Cup Chess Championship – Round 7

The Indian chess team widened its lead over defending champion China in the homestretch of the Asian Nations Cup Chess Championship organized by the UAE Chess Federation under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation at the Novotel Abu Dhabi Al Bustan hotel.

India outclassed Bangladesh 2.5-1.5 to lead alone with 13 match points, ahead of China with 11 match points. A team earns two match points for a win and one match point for a draw. Game points over four boards shall break the tie.

SPICE wins Final Four Championship for sixth time in a row

Webster University’s chess team won the College Final Four Championship for the fourth consecutive time. The team finished with 8.5 points to win the tournament over three other universities.

Susan Polgar’s Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE) headed to New York March 31 to compete for the team’s sixth consecutive Final Four Championship and fourth consecutive championship as Webster’s chess team.

Elisaveta Bykova Memorial in Suzdal

A rapid chess tournament dedicated to the memory of the third Women’s World Chess Champion Elisaveta Bykova was held on 2-3rd April in Suzdal, one of the oldest Russian towns and part of Russian Golden Ring.

The event was 11-round Swiss with the time control 15′+10” and valid for the Rapid Grand Prix of Russia. 119 players, including 17 Grandmasters, competed.

Bu Xiangzhi: Marriage influences chess performance in a way

Bu Xiangzhi is one of the strongest chess players not only in his own country China, but worldwide. He became the World Chess Champion U-14, vice National Champion. Xiangzhi is a member of the National Chinese team participating in six World Chess Olympiads. He participates in the Asian Nations Cup 2016 in the team of China playing on Board 1.

Ju Wenjun is one of the leading chess players of China. She has participated in many FIDE Grand Prix, finishing second many times. She has won the latest FIDE Women’s Grand Prix in Tehran. She is an International Grandmaster, member of the national Chinese team, having won three Olympiads and three World Team Championships in this composition.

Brunettes defeat Blondes in traditional blitz match

The traditional sixth blitz match between “Blondes” and “Brunettes” took place on 27th March in the Russian Chess House in Moscow.

The playing format was Scheveningen with eight players in each team.

Brunettes took an early initiative in the match but Blondes caught up and equalised two rounds before the finish. Brunettes were better in the final yards and clinched a 34,5-29,5 victory. Individual results below.

International Open Tournament Cetinje 2016

Montenegro Chess Federation organizes the International Chess Open Tournament Cetinje 2016, from 4 to 10 May 2016, on the occasion of 10 years of renewal of the independence of Montenegro.

The tournament will be held in the Grand Hotel, once the best hotel in Montenegro, which is located between two city parks, in the immediate vicinity of the historic core of Cetinje, the old capital of Montenegro – the city museum.

Documentary about Mikhail Tal premiered in Riga

The documentary “”Mikhail Tal. From a distance.” by the award-winning director Stanislav Tokalov premiered on 31st March at the cinema Splendid Palace in Riga, Latvia.

In the film, which includes archive footage and present-day interviews, the author tries to explore the feelings associated with the 8th World Chess Champion.

Colin Crouch Congress Chess LIVE!

The Colin Crouch Memorial by the Congress Chess Celebration is going to take place 2nd to 10th April 2016 in the Harrow Chess Club. The event is a nine round Swiss with strong participants including GM Ferenc Berkes, GM Timur Gareev, GM Jahongir Vakhidov, GM Tamas Fodor, GM Daniel Gormally, IM Justin Tan, GM Bogdan Lalic, FM Miguel Santos Ruiz, IM David Eggleston, FM James Jackson, FM Peter Batchelor, FM Brian Tarhon, Matthew Wadsworth, IM Jack Rudd, FM Mark Lyell, etc.
