WGM Elisabeta Polihroniade passes away

The Romanian Woman Grand Master, organizer and chess lover Elisabeta Polihroniade has passed away this January 23rd, 2016. A great ambassador of chess, her activity for the sport has inspired many players around the world.

Elisabeta Polihroniade is a Romanian Women’s champion in 1966, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1976 and 1977. She has also represented her country 10 times at Chess Olympiads, winning 6 medals.

A new daily schedule of rated tournaments is available at FOA

FIDE and FOA have announced a daily continuous series of online rated events. The tournaments are with blitz, bullet and rapid time controls, and have specific division by rating.

All times in GMT/UTC

Bullet: daily at 14:16, 18:16, 22:16 with time control 1+1 and maximum 9 rounds
Blitz: daily at 1:16, 5:16, 9:16, 13:16, 17:16, 21:16 with time control 3+2 and at 15:16, 19:16 with time control 5+0
Rapid: daily at 20:16 with time control 25 min and at 11:16 with time control 15 min maximum 4 rounds

GM Slim Belkhodja wins the FOA Paul Keres Memorial

GM Slim Belkhodja (TUN) is the winner of the Paul Keres Memorial 2016 GP with 36 points in his best 5 tournaments, and 48,5 total points, the same as the 2nd winner FM Dirk Paulsen (GER). Average performance of 5 best tournaments (2331 to 2300) gave the first place to the Tunisian GM.

17th NordWest Chess Cup

germany-flagThe 17th annual NordWest Cup is now underway in Bad Zwischenahn, Germany till the 24th of January. 368 players are taking part in the tournament. All of the players were separated by age in three groups – A, B and C.  Groups B and C have already concluded their matches, but group A is still ongoing.
