Five players share first in Abierto Internacional de Alajuela 2014

The Municipality of Alajuela with the support of Association Robert James Fischer and FIDE organized the 5th International Chess Tournament Alajuela 2014 from 22-26th January 2014 in the cantoncentral Alajuela, Costa Rica.

The 9-round Swiss event attracted 120 participants from 14 countries. The field also included 7 Grandmasters and 10 International Masters.

Grischuk and Charochkina win Moscow Championship Superfinals

Alexander Grischuk and Daria Charochkina emerged winners of the Moscow Championship Superfinals for men and women that were held on 30-31st January.

WGM Daria Charochkina finished clear first in the women’s event with 7,0/9 points. In the penultimate round Charochkina defeated her main opponent Valentina Gunina, who eventually landed on second place with 6,5 points.

The 7th International Chess Festival “Sport Summer 2014″ is scheduled to take place on 4-11th July in Hotel “Petrus” in Paraćin, Serbia.

Gibraltar’s New Governor Visits Tradewise Festival

The Governor of Gibraltar and Lady Dutton this afternoon visited the 2014 Tradewise Chess Festival at the Caleta Hotel. Sir Jim Dutton, who arrived in Gibraltar December last year, was visiting the festival for the very first time.

Kasparov receives first interactive digital chess magazine

AMSTERDAM – Garry Kasparov received the first copy of New In Chess magazine 2014#1 when he visited the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. “I am delighted that you can replay all games without the need of a chess set”, says editor-in-chief Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, when he presented Kasparov with the iPad and the magazine. “This digital edition travels well. It is great that our readers can now choose between a paper and a digital edition. Or enjoy both!”

Chinese prodigies Hou and Yi will play in León

Nearly all top chess stars over the past 27 years have played the Magistral Ciudad de Leon. And that collection will be enriched in 2014 (5-9 June) with two of the biggest all times prodigies.

Both are Chinese: Yifan Hou, current Women’s World Champion, and Yi Wei (14 years old), who’s future looks very bright.

In Memoriam: GM Gyula Sax

The Hungarian Chess Federation informed that Grandmaster Gyula Sax passed away on 25th January after a heart attack.

Gyula Sax (born 1951) was one of the world’s leading players in late 70′s and early 80′s. He won the Hungarian Championship twice and qualified for Candidate Matches from Subotica Interzonal in 1987.

Sax participated in ten Chess Olympiads, winning one gold and two silver medals with the team and one individual bronze medal.
