Bachar Kouatly withdraws from the FIDE presidential elections

FIDE Elections and FIDE General Assembly are taking place in Chennai, India, as part of the Chess Olympiad 2022. During the introduction speeches as the FIDE presidential candidate, Bachar Kouatly announced he is withdrawing his candidacy.

Chess Olympiad 2022 – Round 9 board pairings (open section)

With only three rounds left to be played at the 2022 Chess Olympiad in Chennai, Armenia keeps the sole leadership of the Open section with 15 match points. India 2 and Uzbekistan are just behind, scoring 14 match points.

Chess Olympiad 2022 – Round 9 board pairings (women’s section)

After yesterday’s draw against Ukraine, India’s women’s team maintained the sole leadership of the Women’s Chess Olympiad 2022 with the score of 15 match points. Georgia is in a clear second place with 14 match points, and Ukraine, Poland, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan and Mongolia are in a tie for the third place with 13 match points, each. The top-board encounter of the Round 9 will be played between India and Poland.

Arkady Dvorkovich, reelected as FIDE President

Arkady Dvorkovich has been reelected for a second term as President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) with 157 votes, against 16 for his electoral opponent, the Ukrainian chess Grandmaster Andrii Baryshpolets. A third candidate, the French Bachar Kouatly, withdrew his candidacy after giving his speech before the voting started.

Five-time World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand, who was part of Dvorkovich’s ticket, is the new FIDE Deputy President.

Chess Olympiad 2022 – Round 8 report

From the outside, it’s always very difficult to speculate on what may be happening to the USA team, but it’s clear that they are not going through their best moment. Despite having the best team on paper by quite a margin, none of their players seem to be in great shape, and Fabiano Caruana in particular, is unrecognizable.

Chess Olympiad 2022 – Round 9 pairings

The 8th round of the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 saw many exciting games and, with only 3 rounds to go, Armenia kept the sole leadership in the event. India maintained the sole leadership in the Women’s tournament with 15 match points, while Georgia emerged on the clear second place with 14 match points after a convincing 3.5-0.5 victory over Armenia.

Oliwia Kiolbasa is the Gukesh of the Women’s Chess Olympiad

Armenia took a narrow 2.5-1.5 victory over India as GM Gabriel Sargissian defeated GM Pentala Harikrishna on the first board. The other three games ended in a draw. Replay the match here

Gukesh D defeats Fabiano Caruana to score incredible 8/8

16-year-old Dommaraju Gukesh is having one of the best chess tournaments in his career! He scores incredible 8/8 points playing the first board for the India2 team at the 2022 Chess Olympiad in Chennai. Gukesh today defeated World No 5 Fabiano Caruana having black pieces.
