FIDE Grand Prix in Palma de Mallorca

The fourth and final leg of the FIDE Grand Prix series will take place from 15-26th November at the Iberostar Bahía de Palma in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The tournament format is 18-player 9-round Swiss system.

The event will determine the last two qualifiers for the 2018 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Berlin.

VG: Magnus Carlsen plans to play in King Salman World Rapid & Blitz ch

“The plan is that Magnus will play. That’s the intention, but we have not discussed details yet. But he is very interested in playing,” Carlsen’s manager Espen Agdestein said for VG.no.

No hijab or abaya – Historical agreement for King Salman World Rapid & Blitz ch

FIDE is pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with the Organisers that the dress code for the 2017 King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships will be dark blue or black formal suits, with white shirts, either open necked or with a tie, for men and dark blue or black formal trouser suits, with high necked white blouses for women.

European Individual Chess Championship 2018

The European Individual Chess Championship for 2018 will take place in Batumi, Georgia, from 16th-29th March, in the 5 stars Hotel “Sheraton Batumi”, which will be the official venue of the Championship.

The event is organized by government of Georgia, the government of Adjara Autonomous Republic, Tbilisi City Hall and Georgian Chess Federation, under the auspices of European Chess Union.

Magnus Carlsen: From Hamburg to St. Louis

World champion Magnus Carlsen recaps chess events in Hamburg and Saint Louis:

“This week I was in Hamburg for our annual Play Live Challenge for Play Magnus. The highlight was the Thursday clock simul (30 minutes each) against 13 qualifiers chosen among our dedicated Play Magnus app users. I got quite low on time in the end but managed to win all games.

Chess School Polimac

The Chess School Polimac started its work in 2006 with 4 students in Club House Hotel Kilkenny as a part of Kilkenny Chess Club. The FIDE Trainer Darko Polimac originally from Croatia was very keen to put Kilkenny at the World Chess map and he did it.

Since then Kilkenny is proud of 14 Irish and 2 British junior chess titles, 3 Fide masters (youngest in Ireland age 13 and 16) and many juniors representing Ireland internationally.

Nigel Short first entry in King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships

Nigel Short is the first player who sent the signed confirmation for participation in King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, which will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between the 26th and 30th December 2017.

Nigel Short (born 1 June 1965) is an English Grandmaster, chess columnist, chess coach and chess commentator. Short earned the Grandmaster title at the age of 19, and was ranked third in the world by FIDE from January 1988 to July 1989.

Komodo – Houdini stuns the pundits

The Top Chess Engine Championship arrived today at the halfway point of Stage 2, and it did it with a bang. There were four main trends throughout the first half: Houdini leading comfortably the standings, Komodo putting up serious fights to keep the second position, Stockfish with grim chances and always out of the qualifying positions, and Fire challenging the dominance of the top 3. With just two games in round 14 these trends were turned around.

12th SPF World Open for Boys and Girls

The 12th Annual Susan Polgar Foundation World Open for Boys and Girls is taking place on November 10-12th, 2017, at the Robert F Wagner Middle School in New York, USA.

The prestigious annual event (SPFWO) was created in 2006 and is sponsored by the Susan Polgar Foundation (SPF), Chess NYC and Webster University affording young chess players in the United States and around the world an outstanding opportunity to compete and develop their game.

5th European Small Nations Team Chess Championship

The 5th European Small Nations Team Chess Championship starts today in Holiday Inn Hotel, in Andorra la Vella, and will be held until 19th November.
