FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar in Norfolk, Virginia, USA

Samuel Sevian winner of Chicago Chess Open 2017

The 26th Annual Chicago Open was held on May 25-29, 2017, at the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel, 601 North Milwaukee Ave, Wheeling, Illinois.

The event had 8 sections: Open, Under 2300, Under 2100, Under 1900, Under 1700, Under 1500, Under 1300 and Under 1000.

The strongest Open section with 119 participants was completed over 9 rounds of Swiss system in 5-days.

In Memoriam – IM Stefano Tatai

The legendary Italian chess player IM Stefano Tatai passed away on 30th May in Tenerife, Spain.

Born in 1938, he became the National Master in 1958 and earned the prestigious title of International Master in 1966.

Tatai was 12-times Italian chess champion, which is a national record: 1962 in Forte dei Marmi, 1965 in Florence, 1967 in Savona, 1970 in Sottomarina di Chioggia, 1974 and 1977 in Castelvecchio Pascoli, 1979 in Venice, 1983 in Arco, 1985, 1990 and 1991 in Chianciano Terme, and 1994 in Reggio Emilia.

Belaya Ladya 2017 starts in Dagomys

On June 1, 2017, the 48th final tournament of the traditional all-Russian scholastic chess team event Belaya Ladya (also known as White Rook) will start in Dagomys, Sochi.

Since 2015, Belaya Ladya welcomes teams from foreign countries. This year, almost 100 teams from 80 regions of Russia and 17 countries of the world will take part in the final event.

Alexander Morozevich wins Rashid Nezhmetdinov Rapid Cup

The International chess festival “Rashid Nezhmetdinov Cup” started with a rapid tournament that was held from 29-30th May at the Central Chess School in Kazan.

GM Alexander Morozevich and IM Zhamsaran Tsydypov shared the first place with 8,5/11 points each. Morozevich claimed the winner’s trophy on better tie-break.

The tournament format was 11-round FIDE rated Swiss with the time control 15 min + 10 sec.
139 players competed in the event, including 19 Grandmasters and 17 International Masters. The total prize fund was 7800 EUR.

European Individual Chess Championship 2017 LIVE!

The European Individual Chess Championship 2017 will take place in Minsk, Belarus, from 29th May to 11th June 2017, in the Sports Palace, which will be the official venue of the Championship.

The event is organized by the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus, the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus, Minsk City Executive Committee and Belarus Chess Federation under the auspices of the ECU.

Saint Petersburg to Host Russian Championship Superfinals-2017

The Russian Chess Federation together with Elena and Gennady Timchenko Charitable Foundation announced the results of the bidding for the Russian Championship Superfinals 2017 as part of the Chess in Museums programme.

The Superfinals of 70th Russian men’s championship and 67th Russian women’s championship will take place in December 2017.

FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar in Asmara, Eritrea

From 19 to 23 May 2017 a FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar was organized in Asmara, Eritrea, by the Eritrea Chess Federation, in cooperation with the African Chess Confederation and under the auspices of FIDE.

The lecturer was IA Hassan Khaled (EGY), FIDE Lecturer.

The lectures were in English language.

Twenty eight (28) people from Eritrea and India participated in the Seminar.
