FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar in Panama City, Panama

Official FIDE logoA FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar is going to be organized from 10 to 13 August 2017 in Panama City, Panama, by the Panama Chess Federation and under the auspices of FIDE.

The Lecturer will be IA Barbara Lopez Chavez (CUB), FIDE Lecturer and Assistant Lecturer will be FA Roquelina Fandino Reyes (CUB).

Ernesto Inarkiev simul at United Nations

During the free day of Geneva Grand Prix a group of players and officials visited the United Nations Office in the Palais des Nations.

Ernesto Inarkiev played a simul against the members of the UN Chess Club. He won all the games, but admitted it was tougher than he expected. Inarkiev added that he was proud to represent chess grandmasters and the Republic of Ingushetia in United Nations.

After two days of rapid in Leuven I was in a good mood, coming off two wins in a row. The third day however, turned out to be a difficult one.

First I had the black pieces against the notoriously solid Anish Giri, and I played the King’s Indian in search of a complicated struggle. I did not really get what I aimed for though, but after he missed the right moment to sac a pawn for a dangerous attack, which we both had seen and underestimated, mass exchanges and a draw quickly followed.

Geneva: Harikrishna defeats Aronian, joins Grischuk and Radjabov in lead

Indian Grandmaster Pentala Harikrishna defeated the top seed Levon Aronian in the sixth round of Geneva Grand Prix to join Alexander Grischuk and Teimour Radjabov, who drew each other, on the top of the crosstable with 4 points.

As Aronian weakened the king with careless 20.f4 and then 21.b5, Harikrishna pounced on the opportunity, and after the tactical transfer of the knight to g4-square he obtained a strong attack.

Abhijeet Gupta with a hat-trick in Commonwealth Chess Championships

Grandmaster and former world junior champion Abhijeet Gupta came up with an inspired performance in the final round to defeat Aleksander Wohl of Australia and annexed the gold medal in the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2017.

2nd ECU Congress – ECU General Assembly 2017

The 2nd ECU Congress and the Annual ECU General Assembly will be held in Creta Maris Beach Resort, Creta, Greece from 1st-5th November 2017, concurrently with the European Team Championships.

The official venue will be Creta Maris Convention Centre.

Alexander Grischuk is always entertaining speaker in the press meetings. As he became co-leader in the Geneva Grand Prix, Grischuk was interviewed by WGM Anna Burtasova.

After explaining why it is good to be tempo down in the reversed Dragon Sicilian, and why do Russians swim in Wijk aan Zee in the middle of winter, Grischuk was asked about the upcoming Sinquefield Cup in Saint Louis.

In the fifth round of Geneva Grand Prix Alexander Grischuk scored a win against Pavel Eljanov and caught up with Teimour Radjabov on the top of the crosstable.
