Three of the world’s best chess players are headed to the Hawaiian island of Oahu in March to take part in the “Hawaii Grandmaster Challenge” – a four player round robin invitational tournament being put on to help kick start a local scholastic chess academy.

The 1st San Salvador Chess Open is scheduled to take place from 5-10th December at the Palacio de los Deportes INDES in San Salvador, El Salvador.

The 9-round Swiss event is organized by the Federacion Salvadoreña de Ajedrez and offers $8000 in prizes.

A total of 120 players from twelve countries are registered to take part in the tournament. Among them are 8 Grandmasters and 10 International Masters.

The 2014 African Junior Chess Championships finally kicked off one day late in Angola after logistical problems delayed the arrival of a number of country delegations to the prestigious event.

And the two players representing Zambia in the event being held in Saurimo today played their first round and were confident of doing well.

“This is my chance to rise up the chess ladder,” Ellastrida Yombwe, 17, who is playing in the females section said. Michael Kaoma, 20, is in the males section and is seeded 5th.

The 24th Torneo de Navidad Liga de Ajedrez de Bogotá is taking place on 4-8th December at the Bogotá Centro Comercial Americas Outlet Factory in Bogotá, Colombia.

The event is organized by the Liga Ajedrez Bogotá, Club Sicoopweb and AF Orlando Ruiz Jasbon. There are four sections: ITT Millonario, U2000, U1800 and U10 Youth.

The 37th Individual Greek Chess Championship for women is taking place on 3-11th December 2014 in the luxurious Alkyon Resort Hotel & Spa in Vrahati, Corinth, Greece.

The event is a 10-player round-robin tournament with tempo of play 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game plus 30 seconds increment starting from move one.

The 64th Individual Greek Chess Championship for men is taking place on 3-11th December 2014 in the luxurious Alkyon Resort Hotel & Spa in Vrahati, Corinth, Greece.

The Russian Chess Championship Superfinal, the 67th for men and the 64th for women, is taking place from 27th November till 8th December in the city of Kazan, in a branch of the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan (the Khazine Gallery). The Superfinal is the main individual competition in the Russian chess calendar: it determines the country’s strongest male and female chess player.

This year’s London Chess Classic offers a unique opportunity for a few amateur players to experience what it’s like to face a legend of the game in a genuine one-to-one tournament game.

GM Vladimir Kramnik broke GM Anish Giri’s winning streak in the 7th round of the ongoing Qatar Masters Open Chess Championship. The two players are joint leaders with 6,0/7 points each.

The 28th Belgrade Trophy 2014 was held from 24th November to 2nd December 2014 at the Centar Balasevic Hotel***** in Belgrade, Serbia.

The tournament was organized by the Serbian Chess Federation and supported by the Parliament of Belgrade City in a 9-round Swiss FIDE format with the prize fund in the amount of 6.000 €.
