While Magnus Carlsen has occupied chess news headlines with his recent decision not to defend his World Championship title, his friend and title contender Ian Nepomniachtchi seems to be on an emotional roller coaster ride.

The 10th edition of the 2022 Amsterdam Science Park Chess Tournaments takes place from 18-24 July at the USC Universum Sports and Fitness Center Amsterdam, Netherlands. The event features three 9-round swiss system tournaments: A (for players rated 1900+), B (for players rated 1600-1950) and C (for players rated U1650), with participation of more than 300 players fighting for a total prize fund of 5.000 euros.

Magnus Carlsen has declined to defend his FIDE World Champion title. The news was announced by Carlsen himself in a sponsor’s podcast. “I have informed my team, FIDE and Ian [Nepomniachtchi] that I will not play the upcoming World Championship match in classical chess”, says Carlsen and adds that “I am not motivated to play another World Championship match.”

The 1000 GM/IM St. Louis Norm Tournaments take from 19-23 July in Saint Louis, Missouri. Both IM and GM events will be played in 9 rounds, round-robin system. The time control will be: 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.

The third tournament of the Grand Chess Tour 2022 series starts today and will be played in Westin Zagreb from July 19-24. The SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz Croatia is sponsored by the Superbet Foundation and includes 9 rounds of rapid and 18 rounds of blitz chess for a total prize fund of $175,000.
