GM Kaido Kulaots claims 24th Heart of Finland Chess Tournament

The 24th Heart of Finland Chess Tournament took place from 7th to 13th July, 2014, at the Harju building of Jyväskylä College, in the city of Jyväskylä, situated in the western part of the Finnish Lakeland.

The top seeded GM Kaido Kulaots emerged a clear winner for second consecutive year. The Estonian champion collected 7,5/9 points, leaving the nearest contenders half a point behind.

GM Hrant Melkumyan wins Benasque Open on tie-break

The 34th edition of Benasque International Chess Tournament took place from 4th to 12th July 2014 in Benasque, a town in the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees.

395 players from 36 countries competed in the 9-round Swiss event. Among them were 37 Grandmasters and 33 International Masters.

Seven players shared the first place with 7,5 points each but GM Hrant Melkumyan from Armenia claimed the winner’s trophy on superior tie-break score. Full standings below.

Kateryna Lagno completed transfer to Russian Chess Federation

Women’s World Rapid Champion Kateryna Lagno has completed the transfer from Ukrainian to Russian Chess Federation.

The process that started back in March was concluded on 11th July.

The RCF has paid the 2000 EUR transfer fee to FIDE and 20,000 EUR compensation to the Ukrainian CF.

7th Grand Slam Masters Final in Bilbao

World Champions Viswanathan Anand and Ruslan Ponomariov, Olympic cup holder Levon Aronian, and best-rated Spanish player Paco Vallejo are the stars of the 7th Grand Slam Masters Final in Bilbao, which will be held this year at the Euskalduna Conference Centre from 14 to 20 September, the organizers announced today at the capital of Biscay.

Rapport and Chandra share first in Paracin Open

World N2 Junior and European Rapid Champion GM Richard Rapport and American hope IM Akshat Chandra shared the first place in Paracin Open A with 7,5/9 points each.

Rapport took the winner’s trophy on better tie-break, while Chandra earned 22 elo points.
