Geneva Chess Open 2014

The 31st Geneva Chess Open will take place from 29th July to 3rd August at the la Maison des Associations – rue des Savoises 15 – 1205 Genève, Switzerland.

The event is organized by the La Fédération Genevoise d’Echecs and is valid for Swiss and FIDE ratings.

The playing format is 7-round Swiss and the total prize fund is 8000 CHF. The winner will be awarded with 2000 CHF.

Currently top seeded player is GM Christian Bauer.

42nd Annual World Open 2014 LIVE!

The 42nd Annual World Chess Open will be held from June 30-July 6, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, Virginia.

FIDE Laws of Chess – Changes in effect from 1st July

Official FIDE logoThe FIDE Rules Commission website has the final version of the FIDE Laws of Chess that take effect from 1 July 2014. These rules are to be used for all tournaments starting on or after 1 July 2014.

All-Russian Summer Universiade

The 4th All-Russian Summer Chess Universiade is taking place on 1-6th July at the Nezhmetdinov Chess School in Kazan.

The tournament format is 7-round Swiss in Open and Girls sections with the time control 60 min + 5 sec. The players from the same teams will not be paired one against another.

There will be individual and team medals. Winners in the team standings are decided by the highest number of points scored by all team members.

4th Lev Polugaevsky Memorial 2014 LIVE!

The 4th Lev Polugaevsky Memorial is taking place on 2–10th July at the Polugaevsky Chess Club in Samara. The tournament is the 5th stage of this year’s Cup of Russia.

Bilbao Chess 2014 presented in Moscow

- This promotional delegation, sponsored by Be Basque, presented this morning in Moscow the sports event that in September will put Bilbao in the spotlight as world chess capital.

- The aim of this presentation, attended by authorities, sports teams and tour operators, was to attract the participation of Russian clubs in the European Chess Club Cup and, at the same time, to promote Bilbao and Biscay as a destination in this emerging tourist market.

Russian Championship Superfinal in Kazan

Men’s and women’s Russian Championship Superfinal will this year be held in Kazan, the Russian Chess Federation CEO Mark Glukhovsky confirmed for R-Sport.

Kazan is a beautiful city with rich chess tradition, Glukhovsky noted. He added that only the chess school named after Rashid Nezhmetdinov has more than one thousand students.

GM Aleksa Strikovic claims VI International Chess Open Carlos I

The sixth edition of Abierto International Chess Tournament Carlos I took part from 21st to 29th June 2014 at Hotel Carlos I in Sanxenso, a municipality in Galicia, Spain.

The event was a 9 round Swiss with a time control 90′ + 30″.
