45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest sets participation record

The Chess Olympiad 2024 in Budapest breaks the participation record. 2022 Chennai Olympiad held the participation record with 187 teams registered in Open competition and 162 teams registered in the Women’s competition, a record that was previously set in Batumi, 2018 with 182 teams representing 176 countries in Open and Women sections.

Billy Fellowes v CM Peter Lalic sparked controversy when it emerged that Lalic has aimed for this record for a few years, and already has several three-figure games recorded in databases.

Alina Kashlinskaya wins Tbilibi FIDE Women Grand Prix

Alina Kashlinskaya is the winner of the Tbilibi FIDE Women Grand Prix. In a dramatic final round, where Kashlinskaya and Assaubayeva entered as shared first with 5,0 points each, Kashlinskaya managed to score a full point with black in her game against Mariya Muzychuk. Assaubayeva drew with Vaishali and Kashlinskaya remained the sole winner in the final standings.

Leonard Barden is going strong! At age 95 his Guardian publications continue to bring fresh and exciting chess news to the world. He has been writing his column regularly for 69 years (!!) without interruptions. In today’s publication of Barden, one of the main topics is the Kingston Invitational, where “the longest ever decisive Fide-rated game, 272 moves” between Billy Fellowes and CM Peter Lalic was produced.
