SPICE Cup 2017

The 2017 SPICE Cup Open, sponsored by Webster University and the Susan Polgar Foundation, is scheduled to take place on 21-26th October at the Clayton Plaza Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

The 9-round Swiss tournament is open to the players rated over 2100 FIDE and will provide opportunity for GM/IM norms. Time Control: G/90 + 30 second increment from move 1.

The total prize fund is $16,500 guaranteed.

Torneo de Integracion Zicosur 2017

The 3rd Torneo de Integracion Zicosur 2017 was held from 10-15th January at the AutoClub Antofagasta in Antofagasta, Chile.

The 9-round Swiss open attracted 121 participants from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Spain, Italy, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. Among them were 10 Grandmasters.

FIDE Trainers’ Awards 2016

The FIDE Trainers’ Commission (TRG) is pleased to announce the ninth FIDE Trainer Awards and will continue by honouring the achievements of our most successful colleagues of 2016.

There will be a judges’ panel consisting of seven (7) members, with reputation and knowledge in the field of training:

Adam Tukhaev emerges Chennai Open 2017 champion

Ukrainian Grandmaster Adam Tukhaev (8.5 points) with a quick draw in the top board against GM Czebe Attila (HUN) emerged the champion, after the 10th and final round, in the 9th Chennai Open Grandmaster Chess tournament 2017 for the Sakthi Group Dr N Mahalingam Trophy at Nehru Stadium, Chennai here today.

In Memoriam – IM Cristina Adela Foisor

The long-time Romanian top female player IM Cristina Adela Foisor passed away on 21st January at the age of 49.

Foisor was five times Women’s Champion of Romania (from 1989 to 2013) and national record-holder with 13 appearances at the Women’s Chess Olympiads (from 1988 to 2016).

After graduating the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Timisoara, Cristina Foisor formed a chess family with husband Ovidiu Foisor (IM) and daughters WGM Sabina-Francesca and WIM Mihaela-Veronica.

GM Adam Tukhaev leads Chennai Open

Ukraine Grandmaster Tukhaev Adam (5.0) moved into sole lead after the fifth round of the 9th Chennai Open Grandmaster Chess Tournament 2017 for the Sakthi Group Dr N Mahalingam Trophy at the New Media Hall, Nehru Stadium, Chennai here today.

Smirnov and Timurgazi win Oceania Zonal Championships

The Oceania FIDE Zone 3.6 Championships being held at the Waipuna Conference Centre in Auckland, New Zealand from 14-20 January 2017, ended with Australian International Master Anton Smirnov and New Zealand Woman FIDE Master Layla Timergazi claiming the titles.

Both young talents are just 15 years of age and have also qualified for the FIDE World Cup, Timergazi earning outright the International Woman Master title.
